Venous Insufficiency

The venous system (veins) plays an important role in our blood flow by taking blood back to our heart and lungs. When the veins do not work properly they can prevent or slow the return of blood for nourishment. The most common type of venous diseases is Venous insufficiency (Varicose Veins) and Vein Compression.

Symptoms

The veins have valves in them to maintain blood flow in one direction toward the heart and lungs. When these valves fail, blood backs up causing swelling, pain and discomfort. If left untreated symptoms will get worse with skin discoloration and wounds or ulcers to the lower leg and ankles.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will do a physical examination first then order an ultrasound of the veins to evaluate the vein function.

Treatment

Venous insufficiency is treated by closing the poorly functioning vein by doing a “Vein Ablation”, and redirecting blood thru the good veins. This can be done using RFA (radiofrequency ablation), foam, or a glue to close the vein.
