Renal Artery Disease

Renal artery disease is the blockage of the artery that supplies blood to our kidneys. The kidneys play an important role not just in filtering our blood and creating urine but also secreting hormones that affect other organs to maintain blood pressure.

Symptoms

Uncontrolled blood pressure and/or decreased kidney function.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will do a physical examination and discuss your symptoms. They will review your medications and other ailments. They may then order an ultrasound of the renal arteries to first see if there are any blockages.

Treatment

A renal angiogram and special ultrasound will be done to better define the blockage. Usually, a stent is placed to open the artery.
